Boston Snowstorm 2006

Boston is bracing for a pretty hefty snow storm that should leave up to 3-inches an hour until late this evening. If you’re traveling to Boston tonight, be careful on the roads and drive slowly! For those of you who will be in town for the weekend, you’ll miss the storm but they’ll still be plenty of fresh snow. While you’re out and about the city, enjoy warm attractions where you can spend a lot of time indoors like the New England Aquarium and the fabulous Museum of Fine Arts. Also, don’t forget to pack those snow boots and buy your Powder Passport, you’re going to need them!

Los Angeles and New York are not the only cities attracting celebrities, especially since hit movies with big name stars have been filming around Boston lately. Most recently, a movie starring Morgan Freeman, called The Lonely Maiden, is scheduled to be filming in the Allston area this week.

Undoubtedly, stars hit up the trendiest and most delicious restaurants, offering a guide to the places that deliver a little “scene” with their food. You may not see the likes of Matt Damon at a local pub, but you can follow these star tracks and dine like them too. And who knows– you may just get lucky and glimpse a celebrity sighting over a cup of New England Clam Chowder or a Sam Adams beer.

Boston.com and The Beantown Bloggery spotted these hot-spots. Now here is what you can expect from these celebrity-attracting restaurants:

No. 9 Park: It is hard to believe that “Skinny Minny” Cameron Diaz has ever touched pasta but this is probably what she dined on in this elegant townhouse on Beacon Hill. The delicate pastas and combination of fresh Italian and French flavors has made Executive Chef Barbara Lynch and her restaurant famous. Named one of the “Ten Best Chefs in America,” Lynch has brought what she learned from cooking in Italy to the states with tasty success. The delicate and authentic, yet innovative food and timeless elegance of the atmosphere make this restaurant the cutting edge in fine dining in Boston. Old world elegance awaits you in the nearby at the Harrison Gray Otis House, a classic home to the elegant governing class after the American revolution. Known for hosting lavish parties and being the height of comfort and glamor, you catch a glimpse of the celebrities of the past. (more…)

Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art has been offering insights into cutting edge art, artists, and the creative process for 70 years. Now in its new state-of-the-art facility on the waterfront, the ICA continues offering a portal into multi-disciplinary arts with its innovative exhibition space, performing arts theater, media center, bookstore, and cafe. Here is an overview of the exciting exhibitions going on at the ICA, as well as upcoming events you won’t want to miss:

Design Life Now (through January 6, 2008): This large scale exhibition presents the best work of the past three years in architecture, design, film, graphics, fashion, science, and new technologies. On display are creations from more than 80 designers and firms.

Bourgeois in Boston (though March 2, 2008): Sculpture, paintings, prints, and drawings have been donated from museums and private collections to offer an array of the emotional and innovative work of one of the most influential living artists, Louise Bourgeois. The highly symbolic art is made from a wide variety of everyday materials and represent the body, family, sexuality, trauma and anxiety.

Momentum 9: Kader Attia (through March 2, 2008): This is the French-Algerian artist’s first solo exhibition in the US. His work evokes abstract themes, such as absence and emptiness through sculptures.

Glimpse a preview of more exhibitions here.

Upcoming Exhibitions:
The World as a Stage- February 2 to April 28, 2008
Momentum 10: Ranjani Shettar- March 19 to July 13, 2008

November 26th, 2007 by jamie a

Photo uploaded by jem

We know you love to stay connected during your travels, so here’s our list of Boston Wi-Fi hotspots to help you out! From hotels to ice cream parlors and Irish pubs, you can surely find a place that suits your surfing style.

To begin your trip, here are some hotels that offer free wi-fi so you won’t have to stray very far at all if you need to be connected. There’s the University Park Hotel at MIT, The Royal Sonesta, the Nine Zero Hotel in the heart of downtown, or the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square.

If you’d like to grab some breakfast or a coffee, all Bruegger’s Bagel locations are wireless, as well as Boston Beanstock Coffee and Cafenation. If you’re a bit outside the metropolitan area, True Grounds in Somerville is a favorite for studying, writing, or catching up on emails.

For lunch, there’s Boloco for delicious fresh burritos and smoothies and B. Good for the tastiest in healthy “fast food.”

To grab a pint of Guinness while you work, there’s The Black Rose which is just around the corner from Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. To satisfy your sweet tooth, check out Emack & Bolio’s or the hip, new Berryline in Harvard Square which serves the most delicious frozen yogurt around.

Warm Up with a Coffee Break

November 14th, 2007 by jamie a

Latte Art
Photo uploaded by WTL_photos

While you’re touring around the great city of Boston during this chilly time of year, check out this list of coffee shops to stop in while you’re out and about.

If you’re in the North End visiting Paul Revere’s House, Old North Church, or the New England Sports Museum, we’d recommend stopping in to Boston Beanstock Coffee for a treat. The locals love their double mocha latte, house blend coffee, and their toasty grilled sandwiches while lounging on their comfy couches and enjoying free wifi.

Between walking from the MIT Museum to the Harvard Museum, cozy up with a tasty beverage at 1369 Coffee House. Known for their Chai and Mocha Slide, pair up one of these drinks with a freshly baked muffin or cookie, and it’s a perfect mid-day treat.

Right in Faneuil Hall, Red Barn Coffee Roasters provide delicious Milky Way Lattes and chocolate croissants to warm your chilly family. Stop in here after your visit to the New England Aquarium, the Boston Children’s Museum, or the Institute of Contemporary Art.

On chic Newbury Street, which is perfect for people-watching, Trident Cafe has both delicious coffees and teas and a great book selection! The last independent bookstore in Boston proper, this darling cafe is near the Shops at the Prudential Center, The Mapparium at the Mary Baker Eddy Library, and the Boston Public Library.

Where to Satisfy your Sweet Tooth in Boston

November 12th, 2007 by susan j

Boston Cream Pie at Finale
Photo uploaded by Patrick Haney

If you’ve got a craving for chocolate or other sugary confections, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few of my favorite places for indulging in dessert.

The ultimate in decadent, picture perfect desserts (see above), Finale Desserterie has four locations in the greater Boston area. Try their Chocolate Paradise for two at their Cambridge location near the Harvard Museum of Natural History or go to their Park Plaza location near Boston Commons and enjoy the Apricot Cinnamon Delight, to name a few of their mouthwatering menu items (selection may vary by location).

Another dessert option is the North End, Boston’s equivalent to Little Italy, which is near the Old North Church. Here you’ll find charming little family-opened bakeries, cozy restaurants, and cobblestoned streets. Mike’s Pastry is always popular and their distinctive white boxes have almost became local icon (they also ship cannolis anywhere in the United States). Lulu’s Bake Shoppe and Modern Pastry are two other local favorites.

For lighter desserts on the go, cupcakes are the perfect portable treat. I recommend The Spotted Apron in Beacon Hill and Kickass Cupcakes in Davis Square. What’s your favorite spot for sugary treats? Leave a comment and let us know!

Welcome to Go Boston Card’s blog!

September 20th, 2007 by susan j

gbos_cardslantshadow.jpgWhen my trusty colleague Shannon and I began researching travel blogs, we realized that there weren’t many blogs that focus exclusively on travel destinations in the United States. And few provide the kind of in-depth, up-to-date information that we, as frequent travelers, want and need when we visit a new city. Thus, this blog was born!

We plan to pack this blog with travel tips, news, itineraries, and more so that you can plan the best possible trip to Boston. In the spirit of helping you discover the many sides of this exciting and historic city, I created a little survey so we can deliver the kind of travel news and tips you need. Check back often for updates on new attractions, restaurants, museums, tours, and more!

Why are you visiting Boston?
1) Watching the Red Sox!
2) Sightseeing and shopping.
3) Visiting friends or family.
4) Checking out colleges.
5) Doing business.
6) I’m not visiting Boston, because I already live here.
7) I’m not visiting Boston, but I may in the future.
