Blizzard Hits Boston (Again)

January 14th, 2008 by susan j

Last night, Boston got its first big snowstorm of 2008. At midnight last night, Mayor Menino issued a snow emergency and urged commuters to take public transportation to work. With snow showers continuing into the work day, the National Weather Service anticipates up to 10 inches of snow fall, according to this article on Boston.com.

So, what does this mean for travelers? We suggest that if you’re flying out of Logan Airport this week, call or check online for any delays. This blog reports that if you’re flying Continental Airlines, you can push your flight to next week for no extra charge (a smart move to alleviate crowds at the airport). Whatever your plans, we hope you have a safe trip!

Walk on by in Boston

Thanks to Chandra at The Boston Traveler for pointing me to a new study released by the Brookings Institute. According to the study, Footloose and Fancy Free: A Field Survey of Walkable Urban Places in the Top 30 U.S. Metropolitan Areas, Boston is the second most walkable city after Washington, DC. When the weather warms up in the spring, I like to wander around Boston Commons or Newbury Street for some window shopping.

There are also a few walking tours in the spring if you’d like a little guidance. The Freedom Trail Walking Tour is quite popular among visitors, as it retraces the footsteps of historic Boston figures like James Otis and Abigail Adams. The Boston Movie Mile Walking Tour includes stops at the park bench from Good Will Hunting, the bar that inspired Cheers, and many more movie spots. There’s even a “Talking Street” Cell Phone Walking Tour narrated by Steve Tyler. What’s your favorite spot for walking in Boston? Leave a comment and let us know!

According to an article in the Boston Globe, passengers at Logan Airport were among the worst hit in the country this morning, when the airport shut down all but one runway. If you’re flying to Boston or from Boston this weekend, then you should check with your airline for any flight updates. Here’s wishing you a safe journey this holiday season!

They’re not all out to steal Christmas!

December 14th, 2007 by susan j

Security line at Logan Aiport

Travel blogs are filled with horror stories about overzealous TSA agents and security nightmares. I’ve had some not-so-nice experiences, too, but my recent flight from Boston’s Logan Airport to Washington, DC’s Reagan International was a completely different story, so I thought I’d counter all the bad press TSA has been getting.

As a frequent flyer, I am intimately familiar with the new rules about liquids in carry-on luggage. I carefully packed my travel-sized toothpaste and shampoo, but I completely forgot that I had also packed one of those holiday-scented bath sets as a gift. (Fortunately, I knew enough not to gift wrap the set in my luggage.)

So, when my suitcase drifted through the metal detector, I was a little surprised to get pulled out of line. The security woman opened my suitcase and pulled out the verboten bath set. “I am so sorry, I didn’t even think about those gifts,” I explained, figuring that she’d confiscate the bath set and I would have to show up to my holiday party empty-handed.

“I’m sorry I have to do this, but I’m going to open this box and ask you to put these in your plastic baggie with your other items,” she told me. As luck would have it, all of the items in the set were less than 3 ounces! She sent my suitcase and toiletries through the metal detector again and wished me a safe flight.

Airport security people get a bad rep, but this particular woman was extremely polite and helpful, so if you’re traveling this winter, I hope that you will encounter others like her. And, if you need a gift idea that won’t pose a security threat, check out our holiday gift suggestion.

Snow Storm In Boston

December 13th, 2007 by shannon b

Boston Snowstorm 2006

Boston is bracing for a pretty hefty snow storm that should leave up to 3-inches an hour until late this evening. If you’re traveling to Boston tonight, be careful on the roads and drive slowly! For those of you who will be in town for the weekend, you’ll miss the storm but they’ll still be plenty of fresh snow. While you’re out and about the city, enjoy warm attractions where you can spend a lot of time indoors like the New England Aquarium and the fabulous Museum of Fine Arts. Also, don’t forget to pack those snow boots and buy your Powder Passport, you’re going to need them!

My Trip to the Celtics Game

December 11th, 2007 by jamie a

Photo uploaded by ReneS

I think I’m becoming a Celtics fan. As the girlfriend of an extremely loyal Celtics nut, this is clearly part of his plan. But, you know, even if this has been a goal of his all along, the game we attended for his birthday on 11/21 with the Celtics vs. the Warriors was nothing short of awesome.

Starting with meeting up for dinner at the Cambridge Brewing Company, we enjoyed their handcrafted brews with our swordfish kebabs and smoked salmon salad. We prepared for nachos at the game by taking advantage of the CBC’s wonderful lighter options. Located right in Kendall Square, it’s a great spot if you’re visiting the MIT area. From there, we hopped on the red line and switched to the green line at Park Street to make our way to North Station. The Boston Garden is literally built on top of this station, so it’s ridiculously easy to get there. You don’t even have to go outside!

Tim, the boyfriend, had purchased the best seats he could find to treat himself for his birthday. We found them right behind the hoop and were surprised at how great (and intense!) our view was. We were certainly close to the action, but not susceptible to basketballs flying towards our faces. If you looked directly across the court from us, you could see Big Papi (aka David Ortiz) decked out in Celtics gear snapping photos on his digital camera from his court-side seat.

We grabbed some nachos to share and Tim had a birthday beer as we cheered the Celtics to victory. The team’s got some great chemistry going on and we got to see everyone in action– from Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen. It’s very exciting to see the players that close because it seems to make the game more real, but definitely makes them seem larger than life!

With current standings at 17-2, this is bound to be an exciting comeback year. If you’re a fan, make sure to check out the Celtics Blog for daily game updates and links for all your Celtics curiosities.

New and Notable Boston Restaurants

November 20th, 2007 by susan j

Boston may be famous for cream pies and clam chowder, but Beantown has definitely moved beyond the traditional New England fare to more innovative and interesting dining choices. These days you’ll find new restaurants popping up all over the city, giving locals and tourists a taste of sophisticated international cuisine. Here are a few new and notable openings:

As one of the most European cities in the US, it was only fitting that Boston welcomed the first North American location for Wagamama this summer. A favorite among travelers in Europe, Wagamama features a minimalist decor and hearty noodle dishes served in a colorful communal environment. The first location is in Faneuil Hall near the New England Aquarium and second location recently opened in Cambridge near the Harvard Museum.

Another restaurant recently opened in Boston’s Mission Hill. The Savant Project started serving tapas in late September and has already drawn rave reviews from the diners on Yelp.com for its creative cocktail menu and loungy but unpretentious atmosphere. Mid-October brought the addition of Church, a combination restaurant and music venue near Fenway Park. Their “Seven Deadly Sins” cocktail list plays up the church theme.

And lastly, tonight is the grand opening for the newest addition to Boston’s restaurant scene. STIX Restaurant and Lounge in the Back Bay near the Shops at Prudential Center “pairs global cuisine with an awe-inspiring architectural design,” according to their website. Menu items include tuna sashimi, ricotta tortellini, and grilled quail.

If you have a favorite Boston restaurant, leave a comment and let us know about it!
