When visiting Boston you have many options for hotels, but why stay at a typical hotel? Boston is filled with all types of hotels, but with a little research you can make your stay a little more exciting. Here are a few of my favorite places:
– Before its recent grand opening as one of Boston’s most luxurious hotels, this landmark was once a prison. The prison was completed in 1851 and housed some Boston’s biggest criminals. Now you can stay at a hotel with some culture very rich in Boston history. Much of the original architecture is there, but with some modern amenities.
– Following a similar theme, there is Jurys, which used to be the headquarters of the Boston Police Department. In addition to the great hotel is the Irish Bar Cuffs. Cuffs has become a very popular night spot for travelers and locals.
– Across the river in Cambridge is the Hyatt Regency. Sitting on the banks of the Charles River, this hotel offers some of the best views of the Boston skyline. But don’t worry about getting a room with a bad view, because housed on top of the Hyatt is the restaurant Spinnaker. Famous for its rotating dining area, Spinnaker makes sure every guest has their chance to view the breathtaking Boston skyline.
– Besides baked beans, Boston is famous for their cream pie. This hotel is home of the original Boston cream pie. Ohh, but there is more! The famous dinner rolls from the Omni Parker House are just as popular as its cream pies. Even President George W. Bush had rolls from the Omni Parker House served at his Thanksgiving dinner. Anything that is good enough for the President is surely good enough for me.
I’ve stayed at both the Hyatt and Omni Parker House and I was very pleased with the service. Not only was the food and the view great, but the service was spectacular. I highly recommend staying at any of these hotels.

To me, the photo above is classic Cape Cod. And it’s fitting, because the in Hyannis recently topped newly announced Top 10 Hidden Hotel Havens. This family-owned inn also made the 2008 Traveler’s Choice list for Best Hidden Gem and Best Bargain (the average price per night is around $98 - a bah-gain if you ask me!). You can read TripAdvisor’s user reviews
While visiting Cape Cod, you might check out the JFK Hyannis Museum, the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. All three are open year round and included with the Go Boston Card!

Inside Boston’s new Liberty Hotel
Photo uploaded by
The Onyx Hotel has a Britney Spears Suite (which they are now rethinking in light of Ms. Spears’ recent headlines). The Fairmont Copley Plaza has a 68 pound black lab named to greet guests. And now, the newest Boston hotel gimmick is the . Housed in the old (once home Sacco and Vanzetti and other famous inmates), the new luxury hotel uses much of the jail’s original architecture and adds some contemporary touches to create an elegant and slightly unusual environment.
Since my apartment is about ten minutes away from the Liberty, I haven’t stayed in one of their 300 guestrooms, but I did enjoy post-work drinks in both of their upscale bars. , the hotel’s bar and restaurant, serves an interesting assortment of international cuisine, including Japanese Wagyu Beef, Duck Confit Flatbread, and Octopus Cassoulet. The views inside the 90-foot atrium make for a swanky dining experience. As of my visit two week ago, did not serve food, but the dark, slightly eery bar and lounge has some inventive cocktail choices, including “Doing Thyme” and “Paddy Wagon” (the bar’s take on the traditional Side Car). For those who want to mix in a little sightseeing, the Liberty Hotel is right next to Mass. General Hospital and down the street from the Otis House Museum in historic Beacon Hill.

As this NY Times article points out, hotel bars around the country are shedding their stodgy, tired reputation and replacing it with inventive drink menus and cool new digs. This is especially true in Boston, where you’ll find plenty of locals frequenting the city’s many hotel bars. in the newly opened is a great example of this hotel bar phenomenon.
Whether you want a wild night on the town or a relaxing drink after a long day of sightseeing, Boston’s hotel bars have the recipe for what you’re looking for. Bottoms up!
If you’re feeling like a fruity cocktail… Foundation Lounge at the Hotel Commonwealth has a lively scene most nights of the week, especially when the Red Sox are playing at nearby Fenway Park. Other times, guests enjoy live jazz music as they sip Wild Mango Martinis and nibble on zensai (think tapas but with a Japanese twist). Foundation’s well-wheeled crowd includes business travelers, young professionals, and the occasional group of college kids flaunting their trust funds.
