This spring, learn how to be a responsible consumer and learn about the importance of sustainable design at this year’s d2e: down:2:earth sustainable living festival.

Held at the Hynes Convention Center from Friday, March 28 to Sunday, March 30, this festival celebrates “green living” and how we can all do our part to make a difference. Since Boston has been ranked at #3 on the list of America’s Greenet Cities and Cambridge ranks in at #6, this festival fits right in.

Participating vendors include Alt Wheels, Equal Exchange, Greenward, LUSH, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, among many others. Advance tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and children under 12 are free, so it’s a great event for the whole family!

Black History Month

February 19th, 2008 by jamie a

Black Heritage TrailBlack Heritage Trail Photo uploaded by psd

Celebrate Black History Month in Boston with a visit to the Museum of African American History and a walk down the Black Heritage Trail.

The museum, with a campus in both Boston and Nantucket, is a great way to explore African American culture and achievements. Start off with a visit to The Abiel Smith School, the first publicly funded grammar school for African American children in the country. The building now houses museum exhibitions and the museum store.

There’s also the African Meeting House, which is the oldest extant black church building in the U.S. built by free African American artisans. It’s been named a National Historic Landmark and is also the final stop on the Black Heritage Trail.

Tours of the Black Heritage Trail are offered daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, but the trail is certainly walkable without a guide. This map outlines all the stops that are on the trail, including the George Middleton House and The Phillips School.

For more reading on the African American history of Boston, there’s “After Abolition: The New Century” and “Boston Black Theater: Its Golden Era” presented by BostonBlackHistory.org.

Boston Restaurant Week

February 15th, 2008 by jamie a

Tapas at MasaTapas at Masa Photo uploaded by Oscalito

From March 9-14 and 16-21, Restaurant Week returns to Boston!

Over 100 of Boston’s best and most celebrated restaurants will be offering 3-course prix-fixe meals at $20.08 for lunch and $33.08 for dinner during Restaurant Week. Every neighborhood in the city has at least a few restaurants participating in the event, so you’re even sure to find something in your neck of the woods to love.

From the eclectic 1920s speakeasy charm of The Beehive in the South End to the classic New England fare of Anthony’s Pier 4, there’s plenty of new spots to check out as well as old favorites to revisit.

Personally, I’d love to hit up Sibling Rivalry, Mare, Sauciety, and head back to Chez Henri for another one of their delectable Cuban sandwiches. Cheers!
