Ice Skaing on the Frog Pond

Boston Commons is the oldest public park in America, dating back to 1643. What could be more fun than skating in the heart of the city, especially with the twinkle of holiday lights and the promise of hot chocolate when you take off those skates?
The Boston Common Frog Pond Ice Skating Rink is now open until mid March, and it’s included with your Go Boston Card. The rink is refrigerated so no worries about what you’ll find when you get there. The skating rink features rentals, concession stands, restroom, and a warming stand. After you’ve worked up a good appetite, head over to Cheers on Beacon Street for a tasty lunch.

Through Blue Windows at the Gardner

For a change from your usual night out, the has launched with live music, art, cocktails, and delightful conversation. Hosted in the museum’s stunning courtyard and in the exhibitions, there’s always something new on the third Thursday of each month.
Take part in one of the gallery talks where you can hear artists discuss their own work or enjoy a small plates menu at the Gardner Cafe where you can sample their delicious creations. These events are perfect for those who need a night out on the town to indulge their artistic and cultural cravings.
The next Gardner After Hours, A Solstice Soiree, is December 20th from 5-9 pm. Hear a brass quintet in the courtyard decked out in holly and poinsettias, discover the pagan symbols in the museum’s collection, view the Cliff Evans’ new exhibit entitled Empyrean, and pick up some last-minute gifts in the museum’s gift shop.

Have you ever wondered what life was like before Blackberries and iPods? If so, here’s your chance to step back in time and experience daily life in seventeenth century New England. Plimoth Plantation is a living history museum that recreates a 1627 English village in Plymouth Colony.
Amidst the timber-framed houses and fragrant gardens, you can chat with costumed reenactors and watch skilled crafters as they create historically authentic furniture, baskets, clothing, and more. You can also visit Mayflower II, a full-scale reproduction of the ship that brought many of the first European settlers to the “New World.” In honor of Thanksgiving, the Plantation stays open all day with to commemorate the first harvest celebration of 1621.

Next Friday, the MIT Museum offers a low-cal, low-cost alternative to sleeping off a food-induced coma or braving the Black Friday sales. Their 10th anniversary at Rockwell Cage Gymnasium in Cambridge gives inventors of all ages the chance to join kinetic sculptor Arthur Ganson in creating a large-scale chain reaction sculpture.
Each link must between 30 seconds and 3 minutes, and teams must register by Saturday, November 17. Click for more information or to register your team!

Celebrating the Red Sox 2004 World Series victory on a Duck Boat

Sunday night’s excitement about the Sox besting the Rockies in Game 4 of the World Series continues into this week. Yesterday the team arrived at Fenway Park to a swarm of enthusiastic Sox fans. Today at noon marks the beginning of a two hour victory parade and celebration.
Riding atop of Duck Tour boats from Kenmore Square all the way to City Hall Plaza, players will greet thousands of screaming fans along Boylston Street. Stops are planned fro Copley Square, Boston Commons, and City Hall Plaza, with giant video screens broadcasting the celebration at each location. For the ultimate in art, music, and atmosphere, experience the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in a new light with Gardner After Hours. This Thursday features live music in the stunning courtyard by Russ Gershon’s Intimate Ensemble. The cafe is open for business with a new small plates menu and there will also be talks highlighting the importance of music in the museum.

Learn some local history at the 3rd annual Ghosts of Somerville play in Milk Row Cemetery, which is usually closed to the public. Dress in warmly in costume and enjoy some hot cider and goodies. Presented by the Somerville Museum and the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission, this is a great way to brush up on your local history–Halloween style!
Saturday, October 20 - Sunday, October 21 (noon- 3 pm)
While the weather’s still mild, pack up the kids and head out to Gore Place in Watertown for an Explore all that nature has to offer on this 45-acre estate which is also a local historical landmark. For only $5.00, you can purchase an “activity pack” that includes binoculars, a magnifying glass, and fun activities. Reservations are recommended.

If you’re in town from October 20-21, be sure to check out the 43rd Head of the Charles Regatta. It’s the world’s largest two-day rowing event, giving those in Boston a taste of traditional races in England. Attracting over 8,000 athletes, there’s over 52 events to watch, with championship races on the National Team level.
There’s a Row-a-Palooza concert, Rowing and Fitness Expo tent, a Pasta Party, and a Reunion Village for clubs, school, alums, and parents to reconnect at the regatta. You could also stop by the Harvard Museum of Natural History or the MIT Museum, which are both in the area.
Don your light fall jacket and scarf, walk along the riverbanks, and enjoy the lush fall foliage while watching the boats glide through the Charles.
