Fall is possibly the best time to visit the Boston area as rich autumn colors decorate the city and festivals and harvests celebrate New England’s heritage. Here are four ways to enjoy fall in New England.
- Harvard Square’s 29th Annual Oktoberfest is a local favorite and the best-attended single-day event in New England. Enjoy all-day entertainment on three different stages, food concessions from 40 local restaurants, and eclectic crafts and jewelry. Get a taste of Germanic culture and experience Boston at its best on October 7 noon to 6 pm. While in Harvard square, check out the Harvard Museum of Natural History for an awe-inspiring look at nature in the middle of a bustling city.
- Experience Massachusetts’s cranberry tradition with the fourth annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration near Cape Cod, on October 6 and 7. The two-day celebration offers fun for the entire family. Last year’s celebration included wagon and pony rides, pumpkin painting, cooking demonstrations, and even helicopter rides to give you an aerial view of the colorful cranberry harvest.
- Cranberries aren’t the only draw to Cape Cod. The seaside town offers old-world charm, museums, and pristine shores. The best way to see the town and soak up the crisp air and fall foliage is by bike. Through October 15, rent your own set of wheels to explore the forests, ponds, cranberry bogs, and seashore. If you are a nature enthusiast, enjoy a hands-on tour of the Cape’s diverse native habitats at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.
- As Halloween approaches, nothing beats seeing a “most sincere pumpkin patch” to put you in the harvest mood. Verrill Farm in Concord offers country charm, seasonal food and cooking lessons, as well as a chance to tour their pumpkin and apple orchards. While in Concord stop by novelist Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House, for a peak into the past.
