The Old Manse

Included
Entry with the Go Boston Card
The Old Manse is a place so rich in history that famous people and events come to life in your mind as you visit. You imagine the Reverend William Emerson, leaping from his bed in the early hours of April 19, 1775, to answer the alarm sounded to warn that the British Regulars were on their way. This culminated in the battle at the North Bridge, located in Emerson’s back field. Or, maybe it’s his grandson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, sitting down to draft his first published essay, “Nature.” Even the name of the house is steeped in history, coming from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s collection of short stories, Mosses from an Old Manse, parts of which were compiled and written here. America’s great historical and literary past is alive inside The Old Manse. Be sure to spend some time walking around the grounds, which include period gardens. From there it’s just a quick walk to the North Bridge battle site.
